Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine

Out of the 72 countries currently eligible for GAVI support, 68 countries currently qualify for support for the introduction of haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine - meaning that their immunisation coverage for the third dose for diptheria, pertussis and tetanus (DTP3) has reached 50% and the government is not already funding the vaccine - GAVI conditions for Hib support.

As at January 2009, 58 of these 68 currently qualifying countries had had their applications approved, with 56 of them requesting support for the pentavalent formulation of the vaccine.

The increased long-term availability of pentavalent vaccine sparked a dramatic increase in the number of countries applying to GAVI for support for Hib in 2007 and 2008. Pentavalent's supply was partly secured by the Alliance directing a large amount of IFFIm-generated resources to it.
