BACKGROUND:
Despite significant progress in reducing childhood mortality, nearly two million children die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases. Pneumonia and diarrhoea are the two leading killers, causing nearly 40% of all childhood deaths. Most of these deaths occur in low-income countries. Thanks to the work of committed partners from the private sector and government, new vaccines are available that protect children and offer them a healthy start in life.
GAVI seeks to meet a rise in country demand for new and underused vaccines, in particular against pneumococcal disease and rotavirus. This requires additional funding which could allow GAVI to save the lives of an estimated four million children by 2015.
