Who's saying what about GAVI

In the lead-up to “Saving children’s lives - the GAVI Alliance pledging conference for immunisation” to be held on 13 June 2011 in London, the work of the GAVI Alliance and its partners is attracting increasing attention

"...We recognise the impact of the GAVI Alliance and strongly welcome its efforts to expand access to new and under-used life-saving vaccines in the poorest countries including through tiered pricing and innovative mechanisms such as the International Finance Facility for Immunisation. We call for a successful completion of the first pledging conference of GAVI in June in London, involving all relevant actors..."

"...We will continue to work together, not least at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) Replenishment Conference in June, and to ensure the GAVI Alliance has the resources it needs to do its job. The introduction of new and underused vaccines could result in another 250 million children being immunized and prevent four million childhood deaths by 2015..."

  • Dr Christopher J. Elias, PATH President and CEO, 10 June 2011

"The unprecedented number of applications that GAVI received for the introduction of pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines is telling. Families are crying out for solutions to stop the unnecessary deaths of their children from these completely preventable diseases.

The successful rollout of the meningitis A vaccine in Africa last December is also a testament to the vital role that GAVI plays in safeguarding the health of millions of children in the developing world. At GAVI’s Pledging Conference next week, donors must realise that with their support, it can be possible to live in a world where no child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease."

  • Modou Diagne Fada, Minister of Health and Prevention of the Republic of Senegal, writing in LeMonde (French) and on ONE.org (English), 1 June 2011

"...it is the government’s responsibility to offer its citizens the means to prevent the causes of their poor conditions and poor development. My country, Senegal, and dozens of other countries that submitted an application to GAVI to introduce new vaccines, are taking this responsibility to our citizens by pledging as of today to co-finance the purchase of these vaccines..."

"...The GAVI Alliance pledging conference is a unique opportunity to put the US-UK partnership to work for an unambiguously just cause, and can serve as a model for future cooperation to tackle other global poverty challenges. Showing leadership on saving children's lives will create an opportunity for other nations to join in this challenge -- and it must be taken..."

"...Thanks to GAVI support...our children will be protected against pneumococcal disease, one of Cameroon’s major childhood killers...Vaccination is one of the most affordable tools to solve the major inequity in terms of childhood mortality that separates the rich and poor. GAVI could save 4 million lives by 2015...We need the support from the richest countries, and I remind the G8 country leaders that we count on them next June..."

"...Investing in health is investing in the future and the economic prosperity of our country. The Millennium Development Goals for health will never be reached by 2015 without a significant increase of resources for maternal and child health. The GAVI Pledging Conference...will be decisive for the future of our children. I hope that my Minister of Health will be present to testify to the demand and the need of the South. Above all, I hope that France and all G8 countries will not deceive us and that GAVI Alliance will collect the US$ 3.7 billion needed to continue its life saving mission..."

  • Lesotho Minister of Health, Dr. Mphu K. Ramatlapeng, 18 May 2011

"...As we launch the decade of vaccines, what can we say about vaccines? This is the single most important gift we can give our children. Think of small pox, now eradicated. Think of polio, now almost eradicated. If we do nothing else, we need to make sure we would have prevented many child deaths. Vaccines, this is the cornerstone of primary health care. If you do nothing else, vaccinate your children..."

  • Ethiopian Health Minister, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 18 May 2011

"...Ethiopia looks forward to introducing new GAVI-supported vaccines against pneumococcal disease and rotavirus diarrhoea. These two diseases are vicious killers in my country and the vaccines will make a huge difference to the health of our children.

That is why it is so important for donors to increase their support to GAVI at the pledging conference on 13 June. At the same time the Government of Ethiopia will also pay a share through co-financing the new vaccines. For us, this is an excellent investment in our country's future..."

  • Simon Wright, Head of Health, Save the Children, delivering a speech on Global Immunisation Vision and Strategy, World Health Assembly, 17 May 2011

"...The UK government is showing great leadership on ensuring GAVI’s activities get the funding it needs, but for the Pledging Conference to be a success, there are key governments that need to decide, between now and 13 June, to increase their contribution. France, Germany and the United States are three important donors that need to increase..."

The GAVI Pledging meeting next month gives you and your governments the opportunity to show your support. If donors are generous, we will prevent 4 million deaths by 2015. By 2020, we can prevent 10 million deaths..."

"...Thanks to innovative financing mechanisms and other support from the GAVI Alliance, we are now seeing the roll-out of new vaccines against the two biggest killers of young children: diarrhoea and pneumonia. This progress needs to continue. I strongly urge you to support the GAVI replenishment in June..."

"...Immunisation is the most effective public health tool. Therefore, more countries should contribute and many countries should invest more in immunisation. The meeting next month can be a milestone for commitments if all countries seize the opportunity..."

"...The whole of GAVI deserves to be supported for making vaccines accessible and preventing diseases. Prevention is a worthwhile investment because as we know it is cheaper than curing diseases, prevents suffering, avoids the cost of treatment and disrupting families. GAVI’s replenishment therefore deserves to be supported...."

"...Immunisation campaigns save lives in Togo and for us to achieve our MDG Goal 4, GAVI must be successfully supported in June. All children have a right to be vaccinated. We commit to doing our part to prioritise immunisation programs in our health budgets..."

"...So what GAVI is doing is getting new vaccines out to children and having incredible success. In fact, over five million lives have been saved by this work...

...One of the most important statistics that I track is the number of children under five who die every year. Back in 1960 it was over 20 million. Now it is a bit over eight million. My belief is that if donors do the right things, within 15 years we can cut it in half again to be less than four million. And vaccines would be a major part of that..."

We will increase funding to these organisations, because they have a proven track record of delivering excellent results for poor people... "

M. le Président, get things done !

"...Two new vaccines, just ready to launch, are the best hope we've ever had to stop a couple of mass murderers: pneumococal, which kills about 800,000 children a year, and rotavirus, which kills another half million.

This I've got to make some noise about, M. le Président, and it won't sound like cheering. As aid levels drop and promises slip - in France and beyond - African clinics are running out of life-saving drugs, death sentences are being reinstated, and the promise of new immunisations is at risk of being lost. Bill Gates thinks you should match France's generosity to the Global Fund with renewed support for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations. I think Bill Gates is a very smart man..."

I am fully committed to working with our international partners to ensure that GAVI's valuable work continues to receive the support it deserves and look forward to hosting GAVI’s next pledging conference in London in June."

"...We will focus on one of the best lifesaving investments USAID has ever made: the first public funding of GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
