The CSO representative to the GAVI Board acts as a liaison between GAVI and CSOs, representing the views and concerns of each side, while working to improve immunisation and CSO participation in strengthening immunisation.
CSOs play a critical role in advocacy, public policy, and the provision of immunisation services. Strengthening engagement with CSOs has been a key objective of the GAVI Alliance and its CSO partners.

Released 10 June 2011, ahead of the pledging conference for immunisation, The Call to Action calls on donors to commit to fully funding the Alliance and reiterates that vaccination is the right of every child.

Since the Partners’ Forum, the GAVI Alliance and civil society representatives have been working closely to strengthen CSO engagement, including advancing the CSO Call to Action. In March 2010, GAVI Alliance Secretariat staff and CSO representatives, balanced equally from northern and southern countries, reconvened at the Ecogia Centre in Versoix, Switzerland.
A key outcome from this meeting was an agreement on the GAVI Civil Society Constituency structure, including establishing a CSO Steering Committee, a CSO network (“CSO Forum”), and hiring of an independent CSO communications focal point to support the constituency.
A full report of the Ecogia meeting is available here in English (PDF - 383K) and Français (PDF - 412K).

In order to support the momentum of GAVI’s strengthened engagement with CSOs, the GAVI Alliance recently published Case Studies (PDF - 1.3MB) documenting experiences and lessons learned under the GAVI CSO Type B support.
CSOs have actively helped shape GAVI Alliance policies through their participation on the GAVI Board, Board Committees, and Task Teams, as well as through working groups established at Ecogia.
